Treatment of an ulcer ended in unfortunate death

Treatment of an ulcer ended in unfortunate death

Mr H pursued a clinical negligence claim on behalf of his deceased mother, Mrs S.

Mrs S had been diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer which was treated with clipping. It was later noted that her stomach was blocked.  She should have commenced a liquid diet from that point, however, this advice was not provided.  Several weeks later she began vomiting and was admitted to hospital as an emergency.  Upon being admitted, Mrs S should have had a nasogastric tube inserted to relieve pressure upon Mrs S’ stomach and to reduce the risk of a gastric perforation.  Unfortunately Mrs S’ stomach did then perforate and an emergency total gastrectomy (removal of the stomach) was required.

Sadly Ms S passed away shortly after the surgery.

If the correct advice had been provided and if the nasogastric tube had been inserted, Mrs S could have instead undergone less invasive surgery and she would have survived the operation.

Compensation of £20,000.00 was awarded for Mrs S’ injuries.
